RDA Richmond hosted its Horsing Around Open Day on June 14. The day was action packed with visitors treated to a spectacle of horsey demonstrations and informative seminars.
Starting under a thick blanket of fog were Carriage driving demonstrations, one even being pulled by a miniature donkey. We were then educated on Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) and its fundamental benefits to its users by Camilla Mowbray . Then Suzanne Bellette wowed us with her liberty horse performance. Rounding out a busy morning was the bitless bridle associations demonstration showing the use of a range of bridles that eliminate the need for a bit in the horse’s mouth.
Lunch time saw everyone gather for a good old fashioned sausage sandwich while watching our very own RDA riders show off their riding skills. A special thanks must go to Kurrajong/North Richmond Rotary Club who kindly donated their time and BBQ to keep us well fed throughout the day and also Rotaract who donated a cheque for $2000.
Loads of bargains were on offer with a wide range of horse gear and saddlery up for grabs for crazy cheap prices. The kids had a ball playing with the animals in the newly established petting zoo. The pig being particularly happy for all the attention and treats, but I think the cuddly little bunny was a favourite with the young children.
The afternoon saw our carriage drivers go head to head in an all-out battle for the coveted prize in our agility competiton.
The day culminated with a beautiful demonstration of what a true horse and rider partnership should be with Para Equestrian Danielle Weymark and her mare Charlie showing us their skills and explaining her training regime while answering questions from the crowd.
The day from all accounts was a huge success with a number of new people keen to volunteer and raising over $1200 of much needed funds for RDA Richmond who is only just 12 months into operation.
Thank you to everyone who visited and gave their time to participate. RDA Richmond looks forward to hosting many more open days and events. If anyone has any suggestions for activities they would like included in our next Horsing around day, please feel free to contact us.
